The Brass Sinks Primer
Brass sinks are a gorgeous addition to a traditional bathroom. Like most materials, though, they are vulnerable to scratches and dents from hard objects. Taking care when using glasses, utensils, and cleaning materials will mean an unscuffed surface for years. For regular cleaning, use a soft cloth and a light solution of dish detergent. Tarnish and stains can be dealt with using a quality brass cleaner, applying a small amount with a soft cloth, then polishing it out with a clean, dry cloth.
The epoxy coating stands up to hard water, but can still be scratched. In the event of a minor scratch or scuff, you can repair your sink with fine automotive rubbing compound then using brass polish. A deeper scratch may require a wet sanding, rubbing compound, then brass polish. The deeper the scratch, the coarser the sandpaper you'll need to use. In every case, work your way up to 600 grit, wet sandpaper. The warranties on both the sink and faucets are five years.
Eventually, your brass sink may oxidize, resulting in a greenish film. This is easily remedied by gently scrubbing with a soft brush and toothpaste.
An alternative method to brass polish is a simple home solution:
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup white vinegar
- 1 cup flour
Apply and rub vigorously. Wash clean with soapy water then rinse and dry.
